Hourglass

A stream, trickling slowly
Sand, pooling around feet
Forward motion, smooth and unhindered
Cool, undetected, unnoticed

Even more, steadily flowing
Knee high, keep pushing forward
Warm, a warning

Hot now, level with the chest
Stifling and tight
Heavy, smothering the rest

Pouring, freely flowing
Covering gears, mechanisms grinding to a halt
Frantic, find somewhere safe
Hourglass, running out of time, soon it will reset

Ice cold, sand everywhere and in between
Safety.
Slowly drifting, close your eyes now
Fall asleep.
